Clariant Masterbatches launches dedicated brand for pharmaceutical packaging and devices

Clariant, the trusted, and one of the leading global providers of color and surface engineered materials, launches MEVOPUR® – its dedicated range of color and performance masterbatches and compounds for pharmaceutical packaging and medical devices.

The new MEVOPUR brand acknowledges the pharmaceutical and medical industry’s need for material consistency, reliability and change-control. Its introduction reinforces Clariant’s commitment to following a controlled, consistent and compliant approach that can help brand owners and manufacturers minimize risk potential in an application’s development and life cycle.

This is particularly relevant in light of tightening regulatory controls governing endproduct ingredients, and the increasing responsibility of pharmaceutical companies, packaging converters and device manufacturers to communicate their requirements regarding traceability, consistency and safety to suppliers.

Taking into account safety and regulatory compliance, MEVOPUR offers vibrant colors and enhanced functionality for improved capability, innovative performance and design, convenience and reliability. Color is a valuable differentiator in pharmaceutical packaging and medical devices, making off-the-shelf applications stand out visually or aiding identification for safety purposes. Surface engineering provides advanced functions such as laser marking, friction-reducing solutions, and radiopacity used for the manufacture of components that can be visualized using X-ray or fluoroscopic evaluation.

MEVOPUR color and performance masterbatches and compounds are developed and produced at Clariant’s three dedicated centers of competence for medical and pharmaceutical applications to ensure consistency and reliability in formulations and procedures.

Spanning three continents, the globally-pioneering ISO 13485:2003 accredited facilities are located in the United States, Asia and Europe. They offer segregated manufacturing lines to reduce the risk of cross contamination between products. Segregated storage and change-control processes reduce the potential for product alterations.

The MEVOPUR range includes masterbatches and compounds whose ingredients have been biologically evaluated against USP parts 87 and 88 (Class VI devices) and / or the international standard ISO10993. Clariant introduced evaluation against the ISO10993 standard in response to increasing requests from the sector for this compliance. Among the products complying with ISO10993 is a new range of globally harmonized standard colors for PP and PE as well as PEBA, where ingredients have been biologically evaluated according to ISO10993 and USP parts 87 and 88 (Class VI).

Clariant’s additional services to help customers more easily comply with local regulatory requirements include documentation support in line with FDA guidelines, covering relevant product safety and compliance documentation and information on potential leachables and extractables. The company operates an open-to-audit policy and fully traceable production. Its global team of specialists from R&D, production, sales and marketing, and customer service, works closely with individual customers from the concept stage through to production to develop compliant, targeted color and functionality for each application.
