The interplay between packaging and ingredients is expected to become a major force in the innovation of the food and beverage industry worldwide.

Packaging provides essential functions to the product like communicating product characteristics, ensuring product safety and enabling convenience. Identifying and exploiting the synergies between these packaging functions and the ingredients is a key success factor for manufacturers of food and drink products.

NVC Netherlands Packaging Centre, together with UBM, is organising three NVC Innovation Briefs at Health ingredients Europe/ Natural ingredients/ NuW 2012 which is taking place in just 3 weeks at the Messe Frankfurt on the 13-15 November.

On Tuesday November 13 th Ger Standhardt, manager Knowledge Development & Projects, will focus on Smart & Intelligent packaging. NVC is working on a review on solutions that are used to monitor the conditioned supply chain. In this review the results of the PASTEUR-project are compared to the state-of-the-art.

Within the PASTEUR-project a group of companies from the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria and Spain are working together to develop a “sensor enabled RFID tag”. With this RFID-tag the environmental conditions (i.e. temperature, relative humidity and concentrations of certain gases) can be monitored. The NVC World Review on Supply Chain Applications of RFID and Sensors in Packaging will be introduced on 13 November 2012 at this trade show.

On Wednesday November 14 th the NVC Innovation Briefs will explore packaging innovations for ingredients and industrial food products. Also, the new ISO world standards on packaging and the environment will be discussed at the NVC Innovations Briefs.
