Plastics "star" at pack awards
The green credentials of plastic packaging design were recognised at this year’s Starpack packaging awards with several plastic packs scooping prizes.
The awards were organised by the Institute of Packaging and the lead sponsor was the Waste and Resources Action Programme (Wrap).
B&Q’s reusable PP cover for carrying kitchen worktops that could save 5,000tpa of packaging if adopted by all kitchen manufacturers and retailers won two gold awards.
The Worktop Carrierpac contains 45% recycled content and is robust enough for up to 18 trips and has reduced product damage from 6% to 1%. Annual cost savings on the packaging alone are calculated at £300,000.
The design developed by packaging consultants Outpace, Wrap and B&Q, won in both the Environment, new developments section and the Transit, business to consumer category announced last week.
The 2 Sisters Food Group’s FormShrink whole chicken pack for Tesco won a silver award. The system eliminates the rigid PP tray and label, saving 68% of the pack weight used in a conventional Tesco pack.
Silver in the Pack Optimisation section of the Environment Awards was won by Artenius PET Packaging UK – formerly known as Amcor - for the first PET wine bottle in the UK.
The Nude Skincare range of branded products also won two gold awards - Best Brand Design and Best Cosmetics and Toiletries Design. Mailway Packaging Solutions developed the packs in conjunction with Quadpack and Pearlfisher.
In the Component Development category Gold went to Webb Scarlett deVlam for its teat and bottle design for Mayborn Baby & Child’s range of Tommee Tippee.
Other winners include Promens Packaging that won Gold for Best Brand Design, plus Silver in the Consumer Products category, for its ‘upside-down’ roll-on for Unilever HPC deodorant products.
Easibind and Coda Plastics picked up two Silvers and a Bronze for its Parazone Weekly Shot Dispenser pack for Jeyes.
