Polystyrene bottle for milk and yoghurt

Unipack.ruUnipack.ru / 04.03.2008

A bottle for milk and yoghurt beverages has been designed using impact resistant polystyrene (PS-I) which slashes material costs by 25% compared to PET, according to BASF.

The chemical company joined forces with Alpla, a leading global plastic bottle manufacturer, on the design that reduces material costs due to the lower density of polystyrene.

In addition, the bottles - which are made from BASF’s polystyrene BX 3580 - can be processed by injection stretch blow moulding. This uses less compressed air and, unlike PET, the polystyrene does not have to be pre-dried therefore saving more energy and money.

Jaroslaw Michniuk, head of marketing for standard styrenics at BASF in Ludwigshafen said: “We have filed a patent application for this process and will continue to be involved in this realm.”
