The two bottlers, including Holsten Brauerei in Germany, have switched to the SuperShorty design, which the company introduced to the market late last year, from the current beer standard PCO 1810 (PCO 28) neck and closure.

The SuperShorty closure and short neck bottle finish results in a weight saving of between 1.7g and 2.2g on each pack, according to Bericap.

The SuperShorty closure uses Bericap’s proven DoubleSeal system. Comparative testing has shown no significant difference in neck finish deformation between the two even at high temperatures.

The company said venting capacity of the both the SuperShorty Crown and CSD variants has also now been enlarged to ensure safe venting on 2.5-litre bottles filled with up to 4.7 Vol% CO₂. This has reduced the risk of blow-off where consumers unscrew the closure quickly.

Bericap said other SuperShorty conversion projects are underway in beer, CSD and water bottling applications in Europe, Asia and the Americas.

Bericap general manager R&D Lothar Brauer will be one of the speakers at EPN’s Plastics Caps & Closures conference in Brussels on 27-28 November. Other participants include senior representatives from Alcoa CSI, Krones, Novembal, Reckitt Benckiser, Rexam and Seaquist Closures.
