Bemis JV buys flex-pack assets in Mexico

07.06.2004

Minneapolis-based packaging powerhouse Bemis Co., together with its Mexican joint-venture partner, completes the purchase of certain flexible-packaging assets of Masterpak S.A. de C.V., including a converting facility in Tultitlan, Mexico, on May 28.

The acquisition produces flexible packaging for dry foods, personal-care products, pharmaceuticals, confectionery and bakery products. Annual sales related to the assets were approximately $35 million. Bemis owns 51 percent of the acquired business. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"This investment will provide an opportunity to expand our current film technology into the Mexican packaging market," says Jeffrey Curler, president/CEO of Bemis Co.

Curler indicated that the new flex-pack business will focus on supplying the packaging needs of Mexican food and consumer-goods markets. Bemis and its Mexican JV partner currently operate two other joint ventures in Mexico: Bolsas Bemis, a paper packaging facility, and MACtac Mexico, a p-s materials facility.
