Packaged 'pods' help launch cup-by-cup brewers

Next appliance craze is likely to be cup-by-cup home brewers as brand owners like Kraft Foods Inc., Northfield, IL; Procter & Gamble Co., Cincinnati, OH; Sara Lee Corp., Chicago, IL; Starbucks Coffee Co., Seattle, WA; Colombian Coffee Federation, New York, NY; team up with appliance makers to launch one-cup-at-time coffee makers. Units rely on precisely measured portion of ground coffee inside filter paper disks, or "pods." Starbucks Coffee Co., Seattle, WA, for example, sells pouched expresso pods in eight-count folding cartons with perfed, die-cut window for dispensing. Each four-side-sealed foil laminate pouch holds single pod, features easy-open, tear-off notch.
