Greenstar "first" in recycled HDPE race

28.07.2008

Greenstar has said it beat Closed Loop London in manufacturing food grade recycled HDPE by several months as its Teeside plant is already producing the material.

The company is claiming a world first for food grade recycled HDPE production at its purpose-built site capable of producing up to 10,000tpa.

Closed Loop officially opened its food contact PET and HDPE recycling plastics facility last month (PRW.com 27 July).

According to the Greenstar group commodities manager, Chris Hanlon, his company has been producing recycled HDPE for the past three months.

He added that it is now supplying food grade HDPE to Nampak, Sharp Interpak and Logoplast as well as non-food grade material to companies such as Loreal.

The facility features a Vacurema machine from Erema costing £1.25m (PRW.com 31 July). The Greenstar team modified the washing process to make the front end process more efficient by using less water and energy.

Hanlon said the plant was “a world first as far as we know”.

When asked whether he would be getting the Guinness World Records in to officiate, Hanlon replied, in tongue and cheek, “We will maybe look at that next.”
