Recycled Containers Underline Ecosure`s Green Credentials

17.07.2008

Ecosure, an exciting new sustainable paint range from Dulux Trade, has enhanced its `green` credentials by using pails from RPC Containers Oakham that incorporate 25% post consumer recycled (PCR) material within the container body.

With people and businesses increasingly concerned about the need to actively reduce their impact on the environment, Dulux Trade has launched Ecosure to enable decorators and specifiers to act in a more sustainable way. Under the slogan “Step Towards Greener,” the Ecosure water-based paints have been specifically formulated to have a demonstrably lower environmental impact than standard Dulux Trade products, whilst maintaining the highest possible standards of quality and performance.

Lower environmental impact is measured by a reduction in embodied carbon and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC). Ecosure features 25% less embodied carbon than standard Dulux Trade Vinyl Matt, as measured by an environmental impact analyser. This has been developed in conjunction with leading sustainable development charity Forum for the Future.

Dulux Trade wanted packaging that complemented the environmental profile of the paints and turned to regular supplier RPC Oakham to suggest an appropriate solution. RPC recommended the use of two of its standard pail designs – the 5 litre Lightainer and the 10 litre 295 S container – but manufactured using a specified amount of PCR (waste content that has been recycled following consumer use). Tests showed that the best material ratio, in order to preserve the durability and functionality of the container, is 25% PCR polypropylene (PP) to 75% virgin PP.

The pails are printed in a distinctive green livery, whose carefully branded messages feature a prominent statement of the container`s recycled content. Two ready-mixed Matt colours are being launched in the 5 and 10 L sizes – Magnolia and Pure Brilliant White – with Gloss and Undercoat formulations also available in alternative packaging.

“Ecosure is a really exciting range that will enable appliers and specifiers to choose products that are proven to have a lower environmental impact, without compromising on performance,” comments David Shepherd, Brand Manager for Dulux Trade. “RPC`s contribution has enabled us to offer packaging that reflects our commitment to sustainability. However, it is important to acknowledge that this is the start of a journey toward a more sustainable future and that we fully intend to develop the sustainability credentials of our product and packaging further.”
