The Beverage Industry Can Now Rely on ISBM PP Bottles for Packaging its Products

For many years companies have dreamed of using clarified PP with the same process used for PET; specifically the injection of pre-forms which are then stretched and blown to form low-cost bottles, with perfect transparence, and able to be Hot Fill packaged. Recent technical developments in resin formulation and the design of pre-forms, as well as state-of-the-art blowing equipment, allow us to announce that clarified PP is ready to give us another wonderful surprise.

The Beverage Industry Can Now Rely on ISBM PP Bottles for Packaging its Products. PP did not have a good barrier to oxygen or to CO2, and that is why neither the carbonated beverages market, nor the market for food highly sensitive to oxygen, was targeted. However, its high temperature resistance allows for Hot Fill packaging, thereby opening up a wide range of possibilities for the food, beverage and dairy industries. In cases of Cold Fill packaging, this is also a competitive packaging compared to the alternatives available currently in the market. Its moisture and aroma barrier properties are excellent, so it is highly recommended for packaging spices, powdered food, instant coffee, cereals, medicine in powder or capsules, etc.

The misapprehension, that clarified PP does not have the same productivity as PET, was also dismissed after several successful tests using Sidel (series 2+SBO) equipment. The contributions of this work have already had results in Brazil. Thanks to a partnership between Braskem, as PP supplier with its new Braskem Prisma 3400® resin, Milliken, as additives supplier, and Sidel, as blowing equipment producer; Packpet (transformer) has succeeded in the development of a clarified PP bottle for Hot Fill packaging, with excellent mechanical resistance and transparency, as well as a competitive cost, thus meeting the request from Marbo, holder of the Tampico brand.
