New RFID tag fits round glass bottles
The new RFID tag was developed in collaboration with Nippon Sheet Glass and can be incorporated into curved glass plates such as test tubes and glass bottles.
Toppan is looking to apply the technology in various applications. These include the protection of vintage wine brands and luxury beauty items and the inventory management of pharmaceuticals. The tags can also act as an anti-theft measure. The wireless tag demonstrates good thermal resistance against heat and chemicals making it an attractive option for many in the pharmaceutical industry.
Toppan has been involved in developing the antenna for the RFID tag that can work in glass and Nippon Sheet Glass has developed a technology to inset RFID tags into a glass container. Toppan Printing plans to begin production within 2005 and is aiming to sell one million units in the first year.A spokesperson for Toppan Printing revealed several Japanese companies are in discussions with Toppan, but as yet there is no commercialisation imminent. No European or US companies have come forward so far.
