Building and installation commenced as part of Polief’s PET production expansion

Polief has commenced building and installation to increase the plant’s production of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) from 140 ktpa to 210 ktpa, making SIBUR the largest PET producer in Russia.

Phase 1 of the project will see the construction of a new cooling tower for circulated water cooling and is scheduled to begin in late 2012.

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is the most common plastic for the food and packaging industry used in containers for soft drinks, mineral and drinking water, beer, vegetable oils, and other foods. Recycled PET is used for the production of packing bands, fibres, films, filling and nonwoven materials, and bottles for non-food liquids. Annual per capita consumption of PET is 9.5 kg in the USA, 7 kg in Japan, 6.5 kg in Western Europe, and 4.1 kg in Russia.
